 The Monastery was originally built in 3 years from 1088. The building is a warren of interconnecting courtyards, chapels, stairways, arcades, roof terraces and galleries - easy to lose your bearings, as was the intention, as marauding Turkish pirates were a constant threat.The Monastary can be reached by regular bus, take a taxi, rent a moped, or strap on your best hiking boots and walk up the cobbled path all the way from Skala! On the journey you can take a well earned rest at the Monastery of the Apocalpse, a small cave-like hollow in the rock where, according to a tradition kept alive up to the present day, the beloved disciple of Christ heard the Apocalypse dictated by the voice of God. If you are visiting any of the Monasteries or holy places on the island please be aware that modest dress is required, no beach wear here! ladies cover your legs, remember - this is nearly 1,000 years of history.
