These views are the reward for a climb up to the top of the 'Kastelli' which is an area of ruins above Skala, about 25 minutes climb from sea level.
As you can see there are great views from up here, although I had chosen quite a windy day the air was crisp and clear. On the journey up to the top you will see countless peices of broken pottery some of which apparently date from the year 2000 bc - and they are strewn around everywhere underfoot!
Apparently the construction on the hilltop here from around 750 bc was an important defence for the island, and included an Acropolis with fortified walls and towers. Some remnants of the building can still be seen with huge blocks of stone which must have formed part of the walls.
There are spectacular views looking down on Skala, to the South over to Chora with the Monastery and Windmills on the horizon.
A small white chapel near the summit sits alongside some of the best preserved sections of the old Castle walls.
