Grikos bay has two bays, which meet here. Each is almost circular and until recently, at the centre was a small island. Recently, this island has been joined to the mainland by a spur of pebbles so turning it into an outcrop. In turn this has resulted in an extra, manufactured beach on one side, with uniform pebbles.
This is one of the few places on Patmos where naturists bathe. Until very recently, nude bathing has been unheard of on Patmos and very much discouraged, out of respect for the island's religious heritage and character.
Towards the village of Grikos itself there is a sandy beach with hotels and tavernas leading directly on to the sand. You can also enjoy ogling the many expensive yachts which moor here. The bay is very beautiful with wonderful scenery, but has no traditional village heart or community as it is purpose-built for visitors. Some of the hotels are very upmarket but seem to lack any reference to Greece at all: you could be on any other beautiful beach in the world.
