The village of Chora is perched high on the hillside overlooking the harbour of Skala. It is the capital of Patmos and the site of its religious heritage, since it houses the Monastery of St John and the cave of the Apocalypse.
During the 16th and 17th century, this village became wealthy, as evidenced by the beautiful mansions here. Infact, Chora still tday has the air of being 'a cut above' the rest of the island - in terms of class as well as altitude and piety!
This small square has the main council building to one side, great views of Skala and beaches on the west of Patmos and even beyond to the island of Lipsos and the Turkish coast.
Look up and you will see the tiwn flags, the Greek flag you will definitely recognise - but the double-headed Eagle of a field of yellow?
