Windmills above Skala
This high viewpoint gives a view of the harbour at Skala, Chora and The Monastery of St. John (built from the year 1088).

You can see from here just how narrow the island is behind the harbour, less than 10 minutes and you have made it from East to West! The Monastary can be reached by regular bus, take a taxi, rent a moped, or strap on your best hiking boots and walk up the cobbled path all the way from Skala! On the journey you can take a well earned rest at the Monastery of the Apocalpse, a small cave-like hollow in the rock where, according to a tradition kept alive up to the present day, the beloved disciple of Christ heard the Apocalypse dictated by the voice of God.

If you are visiting any of the Monasteries or holy places on the island please be aware that modest dress is required, no beach wear here! ladies cover your legs, remember - this is nearly 1,000 years of history.
