| Skala Harbour (viewed from the south) Skala is the commercial harbour for the Island, and for most visitors this is the first view you will have of the island. Most of the islands residents live in Skala. The ferry services and Hydrofoils disembark at Skala, placing you just off the main square and 'little square'. Bars and Tavernas abound, scooter hire, car hire and taxis are all available within 100 metres of the main square. The waterside can get a little hectic when the larger cruise ships dock, and hundreds of day visitors rush to be whisked up the Monastery, or buy souvenirs, stroll the streets and take refreshment in the bars and cafes. The road system and traffic arrangements are a free for all as scooters, taxis, donkeys and pedestrians all appear to have equal right of way (in any direction!). The evenings are more relaxed, there are no disco bars or (heaven forbid) 'English Pubs' here, though many establishments remain open well into the early hours. This view is just a couple of minutes from the 'Blue Bay Hotel' (and Internet cafe!) |
